Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness

Today is Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day, otherwise known as TN.  TN is a disorder of the trigeminal nerve which is one of 12 pairs of nerves attached to the brain. Typically, the disorder causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like facial pain in the areas of the face where the branches of the nerve are distributed. These areas include the lips, eyes, nose, forehead, and jaw.  Pain episodes last from a few seconds to as long as two minutes. Attacks can occur in quick succession and can last as long as 2 hours. To learn more about TN, view the fact sheet at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders.
